The Ashford Castle Experience: A Blend of History and Heritage
Passing through the heavy stone gates of the Ashford Castle estate feels less like a hotel check in and more like an invitation into a grander era of Irish history. The approach to the castle is truly breathtaking as the 800 year old battlements rise up to meet the shores of Lough Corrib. Originally built in 1228, the estate has evolved from a medieval stronghold to the beloved home of the Guinness family, before finally becoming one of the most prestigious luxury hotels in the world.
The atmosphere throughout the interior is one of refined elegance. Every corridor is lined with original oil paintings and polished suit of armour displays, yet the service remains warm and quintessentially Irish. Unlike some historic properties that can feel like museums, Ashford Castle manages to feel vibrant and lived in. Guests are encouraged to explore the hidden nooks of the library or enjoy a quiet moment by the roaring peat fires in the drawing room. It is this balance of stately grandeur and genuine comfort that defines the experience of staying at this remarkable Mayo landmark.

Is Ashford Castle a real castle?
In Ireland, it’s not uncommon for hotels to label themselves as castles without being truly deserving of the word. Ashford Castle is not one of these hotels. The imposing property on Lough Corrib is as castle-like as it gets, from the sweeping manicured lawns, to the suits of armor, to the turreted towers, to the friendly resident Irish wolfhounds who hang out in the lobby in the morning. Your royal adventure will begin the moment you enter the grand stone gates of the 800 year-old castle.
Did the Guinness family own Ashford Castle?
Yes, the Guinness family played a pivotal role in the history of the estate. Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness purchased the property in 1852 and significantly expanded the castle with two large Victorian style wings. His son, Lord Ardilaun, later inherited the estate and was responsible for planting the vast woodlands and developing the magnificent gardens that guests still enjoy today. The family held the castle until 1939, when it was sold and began its life as a luxury hotel.
Under the Guinness family, the lands were extended and buildings renovated in the neo-gothic style. What is now The Lodge at Ashford Castle was added in 1865, doubling as a residence for the estate manager and a guesthouse for visitors. The castle was donated to the Irish government by the Guinness family in 1915 and The Lodge at Ashford Castle has been voted as the 9th best hotel in the world by Condé Nast Traveller. Both hotels in fact receive numerous awards with Ashford Castle recently retaining its Forbes 5-star classification for 2025, the only property in Ireland to secure a 5-star rating for six consecutive years.
Can you visit Ashford Castle if not a guest?
Generally, the castle and its immediate grounds are reserved for resident guests to ensure their privacy and comfort. However, non-residents can often gain access by booking a specific experience in advance. This typically includes a reservation for Afternoon Tea in the Connaught Room or a booking at Ireland’s School of Falconry. If you wish to visit without staying overnight, it is essential to have a pre-booked dining or activity reservation to pass through the estate gates.
How much is a one night stay in Ashford Castle?
As one of the most prestigious five star hotels in the world, prices vary significantly depending on the season and the type of room selected. For a standard luxury room, rates typically start from approximately €550 to €750 per night during the quieter months. During the peak summer season or for signature suites, prices can rise well above €1,000 per night. It is always best to check the official website for seasonal offers and packages.
Our gorgeous state room can cost €2,890 a night and The Presidential Suite over €5,000. But don’t freak out at those prices. If staying as a guest at Ashford Castle is a dream for you there are ways of making it happen.
Sign up to Ashford Castle’s email list for offers and exclusive deals. The hotel often does great offers for stay and dine deals especially during off season. If you have a special occasion mention it to hotel before arrival. The staff go above and beyond to make your stay as memorable as possible and if there is availability they may even upgrade your room.
What was filmed at Ashford Castle?
The castle and the surrounding village of Cong are most famous for being the primary filming locations for the 1952 Oscar winning film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. More recently, the castle served as a backdrop for the historical television drama Reign, where it stood in for French royalty. Its dramatic turrets and lush landscapes have made it a favourite choice for productions looking to capture authentic medieval or Victorian grandeur. The castle was also referenced in House of Guinness, although no actual filming took place,

History of Ashford Castle Hotel
As any true castle should, Ashford Castle has a rich history. The Anglo-Norman de Burgo family first built a castle here in 1228, and then lost it after being defeated by the O’Connors in the 16th century. The castle changed hands many more times over the following centuries and the building went through a number of incarnations. In 1715 there was the addition of a French-style chateau and in 1852 two Victorian wings were added.
It first became a hotel in 1939 when Ashford Castle was leased by Noel Huggard. He went on to establish the Castle as a first class hotel renowned for providing country pursuits. Captivating the Irish countryside with a range of outdoor activities is something that the Castle is still well known for.

Another big moment in the history of the hotel was in 1951 when the director John Ford came to the village of Cong to make the classic movie The Quiet Man. Many of the film’s big stars stayed at Ashford Castle during filming.
The Best Castle Hotels in Ireland: How Ashford Compares
While Ashford Castle is often considered the crown jewel of Irish heritage stays, it belongs to an elite group of properties that define high end hospitality on the island. For travellers planning a tour of the country, these are the other essential stops that rival Ashford in terms of history and grandeur. The hotel changed hands a few more times over the years and it was developed with the addition of a 9 hole golf course. It soon became known as one of the most luxurious hotels in Ireland, a place that you could only dream of visiting. It wasn’t until 2013 however, that Ashford Castle started to make its greatest impression on the world.
Dromoland Castle, County Clare
Often the first stop for those flying into Shannon Airport, Dromoland Castle is the ancestral home of the O’Briens, one of the few native Gaelic families of royal lineage. Much like Ashford, it offers a world class golf course and a stunning lake, but it is perhaps best known for its slightly more intimate, warm atmosphere and its proximity to the Cliffs of Moher.
Adare Manor, County Limerick
Though technically a “calendar house” rather than a medieval fortress, Adare Manor offers a level of opulence that is frequently compared to Ashford Castle. Following a massive restoration, it has become a bastion of modern luxury, featuring a Michelin starred restaurant and one of the finest golf courses in the world, which is set to host the Ryder Cup.
Ballynahinch Castle, County Galway
For those who prefer a more rugged and unpretentious version of luxury, Ballynahinch Castle in the heart of Connemara is a superb choice. It lacks the formal “gold leaf” glitz of Ashford, focusing instead on the world famous salmon fishery and the breathtaking backdrop of the Twelve Bens mountain range. The estate serves as a gateway to the very best of the Wild Atlantic Way, where you can spend your days exploring the best things to do in Connemara such as the majestic Kylemore Abbey, hiking the panoramic trails of Diamond Hill, or driving the scenic Sky Road near Clifden. It is the ideal retreat for hikers and fly-fishing enthusiasts who wish to immerse themselves in the raw, natural beauty of the Irish landscape.
Lough Eske Castle, County Donegal
Located in the untamed northwest, Lough Eske Castle provides a five star experience with a contemporary twist. It is particularly popular for romantic spa breaks, offering a more modern interior within its historic stone walls. It serves as the perfect base for exploring the wild coastal scenery of Donegal and the Slieve League cliffs.
Who is the owner of Ashford Castle?
Ashford Castle was acquired by The Red Carnation Hotel Collection in 2013. They began a major refurbishment to bring the castle back to its former glory. The refurbishment marked another extraordinary moment in the history of the castle. Red Carnation Hotel Collection put so much love into the hotel that in 2015 it was voted the Best Hotel in the World, by Virtuoso.
We are going to let you in on a little secret….it really is!

How to get to Ashford Castle in Ireland
Ashford Castle Hotel is located on the west of Ireland so can best be reached by either flying into Shannon or Knock airport. Travel time from Knock is about 1 hour while it will take you 2 hours to reach Ashford Castle from Shannon. Dublin airport is a little further away, being over a 3 hour drive.
The castle is located near the village of Cong, Co. Mayo. The nearest large city is Galway and despite thinking for years that the castle was located in County Mayo we were shocked to learn that the castle itself is in County Galway. The river just in front of the castle divides the boundary between counties Galway and Mayo with the hotel located on the Galway side. While you are in the area why not spend a weekend in Galway before your stay in Ashford Castle or take a trip out to the stunning Connemara to hike the Killary Fjord loop walk. As stunning as the castle grounds are, you are only a 45-minute drive from the heart of the Latin Quarter. We often suggest guests take an afternoon to wander the cobbled streets of the city centre. If you do, make sure to visit the best pubs in Galway, many of which have fireplaces nearly as historic as the ones here in the castle, but with a much livelier atmosphere!

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Ashford Castle?
Choosing the right time for your visit depends entirely on whether you prefer the vibrant energy of the Irish summer or the cosy, firelit charm of a winter retreat. Because the castle is a year-round destination, each season offers a distinct way to experience the estate.
The Summer High Season (June to August)
For the best chance of fine weather, the summer months are unbeatable. This is the ideal time to enjoy the outdoor pursuits that the 350 acre estate is famous for, such as boat cruises on Lough Corrib and clay pigeon shooting. June is particularly noteworthy as “Slow Tourism Month” in the region, encouraging guests to take a more immersive and relaxed approach to exploring the grounds. However, keep in mind that this is the busiest and most expensive time of year, with room rates often reaching their peak.
The Spring and Autumn “Shoulder” Seasons
Many regular visitors consider May and September to be the sweet spots for a stay. During these months, the gardens are either in full bloom or transitioning into spectacular autumn colours, and the crowds are noticeably thinner. The spring dawn chorus walk in May is a particular highlight for nature lovers. You will often find more competitive rates during these windows compared to the height of July, and availability for popular activities like the Hawk Walk is much easier to secure. This is our preferred time to experience a romantic Autumn break in Ireland. Autumn in Ireland is so beautiful and particularly so on the grounds of Ashford Castle.
Winter and the Festive Period
There is something undeniably magical about Ashford Castle during the winter months. As the mist rises off the river and the peat fires roar in the drawing rooms, the castle feels at its most authentic. The festive season is a major draw, with the estate transforming into a winter wonderland for Christmas and New Year. You would be forgiven for thinking that you are pulling up to Hogwarts! While the weather in County Mayo can be wet and windy during this time, the extensive indoor facilities, including the award winning spa and the private cinema, ensure there is plenty to do away from the elements.
Why not travel in style?
Guests of the hotel are invited to enjoy chauffeur driven tours and airport transfers in a range of luxury SUV’s. You can enjoy off road in style in the Keswick green Land Rover Defenders or sit back and relax in the estate’s Land Rover Discovery.
What to expect when you arrive at Ashford Castle Hotel
We didn’t have very far to travel to reach the luxurious Ashford Castle. We are so lucky that it is right on our doorstep and Ronan often plays golf here. The woods surrounding the castle is where we bring Bonnie for her Sunday walk. So it was a nice change not to have to drive very far to reach our destination.

What is it really like inside Ashford Castle?
Stepping inside Ashford Castle is an experience defined by maximalist elegance and an extraordinary attention to detail that manages to feel both regal and remarkably homely. The interior is a labyrinth of rich textures and historic treasures, from the wood-panelled Oak Hall, lined with thousands of antique books and a 19th-century suit of armour, to the glinting Donegal crystal chandeliers in the Connaught Room. Each of the 83 rooms is individually designed, featuring bespoke wallpaper, original oil paintings, and heavy silk fabrics that complement modern touches like heated bathroom floors and touch-button electronic blinds. The atmosphere is further elevated by the scent of fresh flowers and the glow of roaring peat fires, creating a sanctuary that feels miles away from the modern world. Perhaps most impressive is the sense of continuity; with many staff members having served the estate for decades, the hospitality is polished and formal yet infused with a genuine, unpretentious warmth that makes you feel more like a returning family member than a passing guest.
No matter how many times we drive onto the grounds of the 350 acre estate of Ashford Castle we are always blown away. You are greeted at the castle gates with a warm welcome and asked about the reason for your visit. The castle itself overlooks the scenic Lough Corrib, one of Ireland’s largest lakes. We think the beauty and privacy of the surroundings is one of the things that really sets Ashford Castle apart. It feels like its own little world away from everything else and it is the perfect place to relax.

Five Star Hospitality and the Famous Ashford Castle Welcome
We knew, as soon as we arrived at the gates and drove through the winding driveway to the castle, that our stay was going to be something special. We were greeted again at the bridge over to the castle. Security is in place at the castle to ensure the ultimate in privacy for the guests. The castle and woods nearby are a huge draw for walkers in the area so unless you are actually staying in the castle you cannot cross the bridge to go onto the castle grounds. It makes the whole experience far more bespoke and exclusive and I have to admit when we were greeted by the doorman at our car as Mr and Mrs Lavin we felt so special.

The warm welcome continued inside where we were once again greeted by name. We were first offered a welcome drink and could chose between a warm whiskey cocktail, soft drink or water. Needless to say we both opted for the warm whiskey cocktail to warm ourselves up on a rainy day. It was delicious.

The check-in process was seamless. We think the quality of service at Ashford Castle was just impeccable! Each and every person we encountered during our stay was so lovely, friendly and helpful. We truly felt that they cared about making sure our experience there was exceptional. If you are looking for the true royal treatment when staying in a castle, you will find it here. Most staff members greeted us by name throughout our stay, which hugely impressed us. We can barely remember our own names most days let alone the name of every guest staying at the hotel. It was touches like that, that made our stay extra special.

From Four Poster Beds to River Views: Inside the Ashford Guest Rooms
After check-in we were walked to our room. We were excited to learn that we were staying in the oldest part of the castle and we made our way through tastefully decorated narrow hallways filled with portrait paintings of people dating back to when the castle was founded in 1228.

We reached our room on the second floor after a short walk from the hotel reception. The member of staff slowly opened the door to one of the hotel’s incredible Staterooms. Have you ever cried when seeing a hotel room for the first time? Well Nicola hadn’t, until now. Her inital response to the room was purely emotional. The beauty of it just took her breath away. An open fire was burning, soft music was playing, October trees were turning orange through window views. And we haven’t even told you about the bed yet!
The main attraction was a grand canopy bed with tall, draped curtains and an ornate dark velvet headboard. A marble fireplace had a warm fire burning inside, topped by a decorative mirror and flanked by glowing crystal wall sconces. A large crystal chandelier hung from the white coffered ceiling and the room wass decorated with intricate floral wallpaper and a patterned carpet.

Staying in Ashford castle was a dream come true for us. Growing up in Galway you knew that you had well and truly made it if you got to stay in this luxurious hotel. Nicola had stayed before with her family years ago for her mother’s 50th birthday and never thought that she would get the opportunity again. For the five years that she was completely bedbound with Lyme Disease she never thought that she would be in a position like this again, never mind being invited to stay to review the hotel for ourselves on our blog.

Despite its size Ashford Castle only has 83 individually designed guest rooms and suites. All rooms feature original art and antiques, luxurious fabrics, stunning chandeliers and hand-crafted furniture. Many guest rooms overlook Lough Corrib, some even have exposed Castle turret. All include high speed Wi-Fi and luxury bathroom amenities. The bathrobes and slippers provided to guests as Ashford Castle have to be some of the best that we have ever experienced.

Each individually designed and generously proportioned Stateroom features high ceilings and spectacular views of Lough Corrib. It was Autumn when we visited and we think the changing colour of the leaves made the views even more spectacular. Most Staterooms feature four poster beds and ours was huge! We don’t think we’ve slept in a more comfortable bed, even our own and we always think it is hard to beat the comfort of your own bed.

Staterooms also have original fireplaces, exquisite antique furniture and original artworks. All have large bathrooms with some featuring pedestal claw baths. Everything in our bathroom from the sinks (yes there were two), to the bath, to the shower tray were made from the most beautiful marble. There was even a TV in the bathroom which just added to the luxury.

It is All About the Finer Details
Regardless of whether you are staying in a classic room or the palatial Presidential Suite, the level of care and attention remains consistently exceptional throughout Ashford Castle. Personalised touches, such as handwritten welcome notes and a box of artisan chocolates handmade by the resort executive pastry chef, ensure that every guest feels genuinely valued from the moment they arrive. This meticulous attention to detail is evident in every corner of the estate, creating an atmosphere of refined luxury that is rarely matched.

The chocolate has been created in keeping with Ashford Castle’s ethos of sustainability set by Red Carnation’s parent company The Travel Corporation (TTC), and its not-for-profit Treadright Foundation. The Treadright Foundation is committed to progressing sustainable tourism, benefitting the people, places and wildlife impacted by tourists.
The Grand Interiors of Ashford Castle: A Masterclass in Historic Elegance
Exploring the Opulent Interiors of the Estate
The interior of Ashford Castle is a breathtaking showcase of maximalist design and preserved heritage, where every room tells a story of the estate’s storied past. As you wander through the grand halls, you are met with an extraordinary collection of original oil paintings, intricately carved oak panelling, and a significant array of 19th century armour. The public rooms, such as the Drawing Room and the Connaught Room, are illuminated by the soft glow of Donegal crystal chandeliers, while the heavy silk wall coverings and bespoke furnishings create a sense of deep, textured luxury. This is a space where historic grandeur meets modern comfort; ancient stone walls provide the backdrop for plush velvet sofas and roaring peat fires that fill the air with a quintessentially Irish aroma. No detail has been overlooked, from the meticulously curated library to the ornate gold leaf accents that adorn the ceilings, ensuring that every corner of the castle feels like a living museum designed for the ultimate relaxation of its guests.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Ashford Castle is its ability to maintain a genuine home away from home atmosphere despite its immense scale. While the interiors are undeniably spectacular, the estate manages to avoid the cold or impersonal feeling often associated with high end hotels. Instead, the castle feels more like an exceptionally grand and inviting private residence. Every room is designed with comfort in mind, where the opulent surroundings are balanced by a sense of warmth that encourages guests to truly relax and feel at home within its historic walls.

The first room you enter upon arriving at Ashford Castle is the Oak Hall. It has been lovingly restored with an oak wood ceiling and balustrade, original to the Guinness family, and painted a deep red. The Oak Hall also houses a library of over 800 antiquarian books including an extensive collection of reference works from the late Victorian period. Other features include a 19th century suit of armour, a fabulous gift shop and museum and a painting of Lady Ardilaun, which has always hung above the chess set and is one of the most popular pieces in the castle.

Upstairs we had fun browsing the gallery wall of all of the famous guests that have stayed at the castle. Of course a hotel as luxurious as Ashford Castle attracts some very famous faces. Nicola wouldn’t mind bumping into Brad Pitt while wandering the hotel’s corridors!

Unexpected Discoveries: The Private Cinema at Ashford Castle
One of the most delightful surprises during our stay was discovering the hotel’s private cinema. Tucked away within the castle walls, this 32 seat theatre is a cinephile’s dream, adorned with classic movie posters and plush velvet seating. The castle hosts a screening of a cinematic classic every evening at 9.30pm, providing a wonderfully nostalgic way to wind down. During our visit, the programme featured Les Misérables, though we were slightly disappointed to miss the following night’s showing of Hocus Pocus. It would have been an incredible setting to watch one of our favourite Halloween movies, especially given that Ireland is the ancestral home of Samhain. If you are seeking the ultimate festive atmosphere, combining a stay here with the famous Halloween celebrations in Derry is a must. For those looking to capture the magic of the season, we have also compiled a guide on creating the perfect Halloween content for Instagram.

The movie room has popcorn and sweets available from a classic confectionery stand to enjoy during the screening. Guests are also welcomed to take drinks from the bar into the movie room during open viewings.

The Billiards Room and Cigar Terrace
Ronan was particularly delighted to discover the Billiards Room and its accompanying cigar terrace, which offer a sophisticated retreat within the castle. Designed in the style of a traditional gentleman’s club, the lounge boasts a regulation size snooker table and is the perfect place to unwind after dinner. With its deep leather sofas, roaring open fire, and sumptuous furnishings, the room feels both timeless and relaxing. For those who appreciate a fine dram, the bar is expertly stocked with an impressive selection of 20 different whiskies, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a quiet drink in a truly refined setting.

For cigar connoisseurs there is a humidor with a fine selection of 30 different cigars. It includes rare offerings from Mr. Tollman’s collection, which can be enjoyed throughout the year on the Castle’s very own cigar terrace. Since it was Ronan’s birthday we returned after dinner so that he could enjoy a whiskey and a cigar. He enjoyed every second of it.

Things to Do at Ashford Castle: A World of Adventure on Your Doorstep
Ashford Castle Estate Activities
The Ashford Estate offers an extensive range of exciting activities designed to immerse guests in the natural beauty of the Irish countryside. From traditional country pursuits like clay pigeon shooting and horse riding to more modern adventures such as zip lining and tree climbing, there is something to suit every pace of travel.
Those who prefer the water can enjoy tranquil lake cruising or canoeing on the vast expanse of Lough Corrib, while land based explorers can take advantage of the private nine hole golf course or miles of scenic wood walks. Perhaps the most iconic experience is Ireland’s School of Falconry, where you can enjoy a private hawk walk through the ancient woodlands. The variety of options is so vast that there is truly no need to leave the castle grounds during your stay, as the estate functions as a self contained destination of world class sport and relaxation.

A Luxury Spa Break in Ireland: Wellness on the Waterfront
Ashford Castle Spa is widely regarded as one of the finest wellness destinations in the country. Housed within a striking bronze conservatory, the spa provides a sanctuary of total serenity that is deeply inspired by its tranquil lakeside location. The interiors reflect the historic grandeur of the building, offering a calm space where guests can unwind with views across the water. For those who enjoy staying active, the estate also features a state of the art gym. With floor to ceiling windows overlooking the vast expanse of Lough Corrib, it must be one of the most beautiful settings in the world to work out and build up an appetite before dinner.

Family Travel and VIP Pet Amenities at Ashford Castle
Ashford Castle is a family friendly hotel. For families staying at the hotel there is a “Lego Butler” where younger guests can order Lego room service and babysitting services are available on request. One thing worth noting, many of the activities have an age minimum of 8 years, so if you are traveling with younger children, check the requirements ahead of time so no one is disappointed. If you are exploring further afield with your family after Ashford Castle then you may want to check out our guide on the best Airbnbs in Ireland for groups or family holidays.
Is Ashford Castle Dog Friendly?
For many travellers, a luxury getaway is only complete if their canine companion can join the adventure, and Ashford Castle excels in this regard. The estate is famously dog friendly, treating four legged visitors with the same level of VIP service as their human counterparts. Upon arrival, your pet can enjoy a range of dedicated amenities including plush beds, personalised welcome treats, and even a specialised “dog room service” menu.
The 350 acre grounds provide the perfect playground for long walks through ancient woodlands and along the shores of Lough Corrib. While there are certain areas within the castle where dogs are restricted for the comfort of all guests, the outdoor facilities and the warm welcome from the staff ensure that your pet will feel right at home. It is always advisable to contact the reservations team in advance to book one of the specific pet friendly rooms, as these are highly sought after by those looking for the ultimate luxury break with their dog in the West of Ireland.
Pets are also welcome freely in the Castle and grounds except for dining areas. Beds are provided for dogs of any size, along with towels, water and food bowls.
Exploring the Ashford Estate: A Journey Through the Castle Grounds
Even if you choose not to participate in the organised activities, we highly recommend collecting a map from reception to explore the vast and varied estate. The grounds are truly extensive, and visiting during the autumn months is a sensory delight as the foliage transforms into a palette of deep russets and golds. You could easily spend an entire afternoon wandering through the fresh air, discovering hidden stone tunnels, secluded secret gardens, and even a well maintained tennis court tucked away in the greenery.
For those who prefer to cover more ground, the castle provides charming retro style bicycles, allowing you to cycle through the ancient woodlands at your own pace. There is something incredibly therapeutic about getting lost amongst the historic pathways and manicured lawns, making the estate itself as much of an attraction as the castle building.

Dining at Ashford Castle: A Feast for the Senses
The culinary offering at Ashford Castle is as impressive as its architecture, providing a range of dining environments that span from formal fine dining to relaxed bistro fare. Each venue prioritises locally sourced ingredients from across County Mayo and the wider Connaught region, ensuring a true taste of the West of Ireland.
Ashford Castle is privileged to have access to some of the finest locally sourced ingredients in Ireland. The meats and fish come from the surrounding counties and wherever possible ingredients are sourced right there on the estate. The walled garden provides an array of vegetables and fruits in the summer. From February to November the team forage for wild berries to make homemade jams and chutneys. Guests are invited to join the team as they forage in the mornings. The only other place that we had experienced this was at Brooklodge and Macreddin village in Wicklow and it was an incredible experience.
When it comes to dining options at Ashford Castle you have many options.
The George V Dining Room
For the quintessential castle experience, dinner in the George V Dining Room is an absolute necessity. Named after the British monarch who visited the estate in 1906, this room is the height of Edwardian opulence, featuring glittering Waterford crystal chandeliers and a formal dress code. The service is impeccably choreographed, often including the dramatic carving of meat at your table from a silver trolley. The menu focuses on modern Irish cuisine, where traditional flavours are elevated through sophisticated techniques and artistic presentation.
The George V Dining Room was built in 1905 solely for the arrival of the Prince of Wales, who later went on to become George V. It really is a room fit for a king! There is a real sense of occasion in this dining room.

We don’t know why but it always makes us think that this is what first class dining on The Titanic must have been like. It really is such a graceful setting. Bear in mind that it is a formal dining experience and men are required to wear a dinner jacket and tie.
The Drawing Room
We decided on the slightly less formal but equally exquistite Drawing Room for dinner. The menu is more bistro style and included burgers and steaks. We both decided on an 8oz Ribeye steak with fries and it was so delicious. Staff were really attentive and so friendly and we loved finding out that they wear waistcoats with honey bees on them because they consider themselves the happy worker bees to the Queen Bea (Beatrice Tollman, nickname Bea, who owns the Red Carnation Hotel Group).

The Dungeon
As its name would suggest, the unique setting located on the lower ground floor of the castle invites diners to enjoy a range of dishes with a focus on traditional Irish cuisine beneath the historic curved stone ceiling. Unfortunately it wasn’t open during our stay but the same menu is served in The Drawing Room.

The Prince of Wales Bar
Aptly named for the Prince of Wales visit in 1905, the bar was used as the Prince’s private bar, allowing him to retire in peace before and after dinner. The two doors leading from the George V Dining Room are still there today, but are no longer in use. It is the perfect place to enjoy a pre or post dinner drink, serving a fine selection of cocktails, Irish and Scotch whiskeys and of course Ronan’s favourite Guinness.

Afternoon Tea at Ashford Castle
No visit to Ashford would be complete without experiencing the legendary Afternoon Tea in the Connaught Room. With views overlooking the manicured gardens and the waters of Lough Corrib, this is a refined way to spend a midday break. The experience features a delicate selection of finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream, and intricate pastries crafted by the executive pastry chef. While we thoroughly enjoyed the rustic charm of our afternoon tea in the Cotswolds, the service here at the castle offers a grander, more regal interpretation of this beloved tradition. It is an extremely popular service, so we highly recommend booking your table well in advance of your stay.
The long established tradition of Afternoon Tea has been wonderfully preserved at Ashford Castle since 1868. In the Connacht Room you will find the original silver tea set that was presented to Lord and Lady Ardilaun to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1896. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea overlooking stunning views of the Lough and gardens.

Cullen’s at the Cottage
If you fancy dining outside of the Castle you can cross the bridge over to a charming little thatch cottage still on the Estate. Open mostly during the Summer months you can enjoy dinner in a beautiful rustic setting. The menu comprises both local and international dishes, including fresh lobster and oysters. You don’t have to be a resident of the Castle to dine here and myself and Ronan often come at least once in the Summer to enjoy fish’n’chips with castle views.

Is There a Dress Code for Ashford Castle?
While most areas of Ashford Castle embrace a relaxed, upscale atmosphere, there is a specific formal dress code for its signature fine-dining restaurant. Guests generally find that “smart casual” is the most versatile attire for exploring the public rooms and the estate.
The George V Dining Room
The George V Dining Room is the only venue on the estate with a mandatory formal dress code. This rule is strictly observed for dinner service to maintain the restaurant’s sense of occasion and Edwardian grandeur.
- For Gentlemen: A jacket is required for dinner. While a suit jacket or blazer is necessary, a tie is considered optional.
- For Ladies: Cocktail dresses, elegant evening wear, or dressy trouser suits are most appropriate for this setting.
- Provision of Jackets: Visitors have noted that if a male guest arrives without a jacket, the castle often provides one for the evening.
The Connaught Room and Public Areas
For other popular experiences, such as Afternoon Tea or light lunches, the atmosphere is considerably more relaxed, though most guests still choose to dress appropriately for a five-star environment.
- Afternoon Tea: Formally, there is no strict dress code for the Connaught Room. However, smart casual is highly recommended. Many guests opt for nice trousers and collared shirts, avoiding blue denim and sportswear.
- The Drawing Room and The Dungeon: These areas are significantly more informal. The Dungeon, in particular, is described by guests as very casual, making it a popular choice for those on an informal trip.
- Outdoor Activities: Since the estate covers 350 acres of woodland and lakefront, practical outdoor gear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy walking shoes are essential for exploring the grounds or participating in falconry and clay pigeon shooting.
Fine Dining at Dawn: What to Expect for Breakfast at Ashford Castle
Breakfast in the George V Dining Room is far more than a simple morning meal; it is a meticulously choreographed event that begins the day with a profound sense of ceremony. As the morning light filters through the vast windows and glints off the Waterford crystal chandeliers, guests are treated to a spread that celebrates the very best of Irish produce. The experience is famous for its silver trolley service, where a chef expertly carves traditional honey-glazed hams or serves smoked salmon right at your table. Beyond the extensive buffet of artisan cheeses, freshly baked pastries, and exotic fruits, you can order bespoke dishes such as the classic Full Irish or fluffy pancakes topped with local berries. The attentive staff ensure that every cup of tea or coffee is poured to perfection, creating a refined yet relaxed atmosphere that encourages you to linger and soak in the historic surroundings before heading out to explore the estate.
Breakfast at Ashford Castle Hotel is a real treat. Some of our favourites were the fresh fruits, pastries, and the little bottles of juices and smoothies that are made in-house. You have to try the apple and kale smoothie. We even had a slice of honey roast ham hand carved at the table for us. It was so tasty with a little sample of Dijon Mustard.

There is also a menu with hot dishes to choose from (included in the breakfast); don’t miss the smoked salmon, avocado, poached egg on the most delicious brioche toast!

Is Ashford Castle Worth the Price?
Staying at Ashford Castle is undeniably a significant investment, but for those seeking a “once in a lifetime” experience, it is widely considered to be worth every penny. The cost covers far more than just a room; you are paying for an unparalleled level of service, access to 350 acres of historic grounds, and the rare opportunity to live within a meticulously preserved medieval fortress. From the moment the gatekeeper welcomes you at the stone entrance, the attention to detail and the genuine warmth of the staff create a sense of magic that is difficult to replicate in modern luxury hotels.
Sometimes the hotel IS the unique experience! Those moments that you don’t get often in life. In Ashford Castle’s case, we thought it offered something unique: the fact that it’s a real historic castle, the beauty of the setting and surrounding estate, and the unique activities that are offered. We have never stayed in a hotel that offers the bespoke service and attention to guests that Ashford Castle does.
Ashford Castle vs. The Lodge at Ashford Castle
For travellers who are mindful of their budget but still wish to experience the magic of the estate, it is helpful to understand the difference between the main castle and The Lodge at Ashford Castle.
Estate Access: The biggest benefit of staying at The Lodge is that you enjoy full access to the same estate activities, such as falconry, golf, and the beautiful grounds. While you may not be sleeping within the castle walls, you can still book dinner or afternoon tea at the main castle, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds without the premium overnight price tag.
Atmosphere: The main castle is the epitome of traditional royal grandeur, featuring heavy fabrics, priceless antiques, and a formal “old world” charm. In contrast, The Lodge offers a more contemporary and relaxed “country house” vibe. It is described as the castle’s fun and funky sister property, with a bright, chic interior that feels less formal but equally stylish.
Price and Value: Staying at The Lodge is significantly more affordable, often costing less than half the price of a room in the main castle. This makes it an excellent “luxury compromise” for families or those on a shorter visit.

Ashford Castle is definitely a pricey hotel, but our verdict was that was 100% worth every penny. It is a real treat especially for a special occasion. We honestly could not find anything to fault in our entire stay. We were hoping for an indulgent and memorable stay, and all our expectations were exceeded. It was an absolute dream come true and we are still pinching ourselves! In our opinion Ashford Castle should be experienced by everyone at least once in their lifetime and it is the ultimate bucket list stay.
Ultimately, a stay at Ashford Castle is more than a mere hotel booking; it is an immersion into a storied chapter of Irish history where the service is as legendary as the architecture. Whether you are flying a hawk for the first time in the ancient woodlands or sipping a quiet whiskey in the Billiards Room, the estate offers a rare blend of royal grandeur and genuine, heartfelt hospitality. While the price reflects its status as one of the world’s leading hotels, the memories of waking up within those stone walls and wandering through the mist-covered gardens are truly priceless. If you are looking for a destination that captures the soul of Ireland while providing every possible modern luxury, Ashford Castle remains the undisputed jewel of the Emerald Isle.
