This former industrial city is now uber cool, and we have come up with the best one-day in Bilbao itinerary for you so that you can make the most out of 24 hours in this vibrant city. Bilbao is a mecca for art lovers, and you can see some of the world’s most renowned works in just one day. Our itinerary will take you to the best museums, galleries, and public art installations in the city.

Bilbao in a Day: Your Hour-by-Hour Guide

If you only have twenty-four hours to capture the spirit of this Basque powerhouse, you need to move with purpose. Bilbao is a city that rewards the early riser and the late-night wanderer alike. Before we delve into more detail and suggestions here is a practical timeline to help you navigate your day without feeling rushed.

• 09:00 — Fuel Up Like a Local

Start your morning at Sua San or Cinnamon. Order a “tostada con tomate” and a strong café con leche. It is a simple, traditional start that gives you enough energy to tackle the museum galleries ahead.

• 10:00 — The Guggenheim Gold Rush

Aim to be at the Guggenheim Museum the moment the doors open. By beating the mid-morning tour groups, you can enjoy the “Matter of Time” installation in relative silence. Do not forget to say hello to Puppy, the flower-clad guard dog waiting outside the main entrance.

• 13:00 — The Plaza Nueva Pintxo Crawl

Before you lace up your walking shoes and head out into the city, there are a few practicalities that will make your day in Bilbao run much smoother. Unlike some major Spanish hubs, Bilbao has its own unique rhythm and cultural identity, so keeping these quick facts in mind will help you navigate the city like a seasoned pro.

• The Monday Rule: This is a vital one for your planning. Many of the city’s top cultural spots, including the Guggenheim and several smaller galleries, traditionally close their doors on Mondays. If you are visiting specifically for the art scene, try to schedule your trip between Tuesday and Sunday to avoid staring at a closed entrance.

• The Local Language: You will notice immediately that the street signs and menus look a bit different here. While everyone speaks Spanish, you will see Euskara (the Basque language) everywhere. It is one of the oldest and most mysterious languages in Europe. Learning a simple “Kaixo” (Hello) or “Eskerrik asko” (Thank you) goes a long way with the locals, though you will get by perfectly fine with Spanish or English.

• Currency and Cash: As with the rest of Spain, the currency is the Euro (€). While most bars and shops in the modern areas take cards, some of the older, traditional pintxo bars in Casco Viejo still prefer cash for small rounds of drinks. It is incredibly scenic and links the Guggenheim directly to the heart of the Old Town, making it a brilliant way to travel between major sights without missing the views of the estuary. For longer hops, the Bilbao Metro is world-class and very easy to navigate, with its distinctive glass entrances known locally as “Fosteritos” after the architect Norman Foster. If you plan on using public transport more than a couple of times, it is worth picking up a Barik card from any station, as it keeps fares low and allows you to hop on and off the trams, buses, and trains with a single tap.

As it is one of Bilbao’s top attractions, we recommend getting your tickets in advance to avoid any chance of it being booked out. It can get especially busy with school trips and guided tours, so don’t miss your chance to visit.

Also, just outside the main entrance is our favourite sculpture, the Puppy by Jeff Koons, the world’s largest flower sculpture! It has over 38,000 flowers, so it’s definitely impressive to see. Especially if it is in full bloom.

Inside, you will find an auditorium, galleries, multi-purpose spaces, cinemas, a sports centre with a swimming pool, restaurants, and a library with over 60,000 titles, where locals like to go and sit for hours! A total of 43,000 square metres of public space is designed to enhance social unity among the public, as defined by one of its original driving forces, former Mayor Iñaki Azkuna: “a meeting point for culture and a catalyst for peaceful coexistence.” 

The outdoor areas are cleverly designed to reflect a sense of coming home. Cosy lamps and tables line the streets, and as you exit, there is a mirror to check yourself before you leave “your house.” Entry is completely free, and it is the perfect place to enjoy local life in Bilbao.
